Welcome Back! I hope that all of you have a great Spring Break! Unfortunately we have to get back to work. Today we started working on the cereal box project. Students are working in groups of 3 to 5 to design a cereal box with the greatest volume but the least amount of surface area. As a group, students will turn in the cereal box that they design. Individually, each student will turn in a net drawing of their group's cereal box as well as the calculations of surface area and volume. The directions and rubric for this project are attached to my math web page. Please refer to this if you lost your rubric or if you have any questions.

Today, we went over three-dimensional shapes. We looked at samples of 3-D shapes and labeled and defined the parts, including the face, edge, height, and base. We then discussed how to name each shape depending on its characteristics. For example if the base is square and the faces are triangular and meet at a vertex, what is the shape? By this description, the shape is a square pyramid.

Today, we went over Perfect Squares and Irrational Numbers. Everyone has a purple sheet in their Chapter 8 packet that has a list of Perfect Squares that will come in handy when doing their homework tonight. We went over squaring numbers, using square roots (the opposite of squaring a number) and how to determine whether a number is rational or irrational. Irrational numbers cannot be made into a fraction and are non-repeating and non-terminating. This week's lessons have been more challenging than in previous weeks because we have multiple formulas to work with at the same time.

Today we learned how to find the area and the perimeter of a triangle. With the activity we did in class, we discovered that the area of a triangle is 1/2 the area of a rectangle. Therefore the formula for area of a triangle is A = 1/2bh. Perimeter is the distance around a figure. So to find perimeter of a triangle, you would add up all 3 sides of the triangle.

Sometimes the sames are just in different positions so they do not look like they are the same. It just takes turning or flipping the shape to make it look the same.

Today we did a variety of things. We reviewed last nights homework, went over some more examples involving scale and proportions, and work on the Chapter Test in preparation for the test on Thursday. Speaking of the test on Thursday, I am requiring that the students show ALL of the steps for each problem. Each question will be worth 2 points, 1 point for showing work/steps and 1 point for the correct answer. Students who do not show their work but get all the questions correct will receive 50%, so it is very IMPORTANT that students show ALL of their work.
I updated grades on Edline today. The ** for the Type 3 Writing means that the assignment was turned in. I have just not had time to grade it. If the score is 0, then the student did NOT do the assignment.
Remember, Friday, January 14 is the LAST day to turn in missing work for the marking period. Exams start next week Wednesday. Students will receive the exam review on Thursday. We will spend time working on the review in class on Friday, Monday for morning classes only, and we will go over the review in class on Tuesday.
